Section 1: Welcome and introduction to the course  – overview of course content and learning outcomes.

Section 2: Introduction: What is Geographic Citizen Science?

This section begins by exploring the following questions:

  • What is citizen science?
  • What makes something scientific?
  • When is Citizen Science Geographic?

It then moves on to look at the tools that exist for undertaking Citizen Science, and what makes Sapelli unique. It ends with some examples of GCS projects that we have worked on, to get a feel for what is possible.

Section 3: Getting Started

Identifying participants’ own data collection projects, the tools that are suitable and how to design the project. Thinking through the advantages/disadvantages and the risks and benefits involved.

Section 4: Practical introduction

Developing an understanding of the data structure of the project: How to draw out categories and subcategories. Drawing out wireframes, adding “codes” to wireframes. Producing/selecting/testing icons and sound files.

Section 5: Sapelli Designer

An overview of how to use Sapelli designer, how to start a new project, changing form settings, the layout, a guide/glossary to the individual units and how to map out the decision trees (created earlier) into Designer.

Section 6: Sapelli Collector

An overview of how to use Sapelli Collector, how to get a .sap project from Sapelli Designer to your mobile device, how to load a .sap project, how to change transmission settings, checking/correcting errors, running the project, dos and don’ts.

Section 7: Sapelli Viewer

An overview of how to use Sapelli viewer including loading a project, orientation options, filtering options, map options
